Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

Part 2 ⬇️
My attorney, Rachel, arrived within the hour.
She didn't say anything at first.
She just put on her glasses and read.
I watched her face.
Halfway through the second page, she stopped.
"Who witnessed this?" she asked.
"I don't know them."
She turned to the signature page and held it under the lamp.
"This wasn't signed by the same hand twice," she said quietly.
"Look at the loop on the Y.
It's different from the one on page one."
My stomach dropped.
"Meaning what?"
"Meaning someone practiced your signature.
And they weren't careful enough the second time."
She set the document down and looked at me directly.
"Has Daniel ever asked you to sign anything without explaining what it was?"
I thought back.
A form last spring.
He said it was a tax document.
I hadn't read it carefully.
Rachel's expression didn't change, but something behind her eyes did.
"I need you to think hard," she said.
"Because if what I'm seeing is what I think it is, this isn't the only document."
My phone lit up on the table.
A text from Daniel.
*Come home.
We need to talk about what you took.*
I showed Rachel the screen.
She read it once.
Then she picked up her own phone.
"Don't reply," she said.
"And don't go back to that house tonight."
