Chapter 9: The Consequences at Last

Six months later, I sat beside Chloe in the same courthouse.

Evelyn stood before the judge in a plain navy suit, her hands locked together.

The prosecutor read the agreement.

“Evelyn Vance pleads guilty to forgery, financial fraud, and conspiracy to commit unlawful entry.

She will serve twenty months in state custody, pay restitution, and remain under a no-contact order after release.”

The judge looked over his glasses.

“Mrs.

Vance, do you understand these consequences?”

Evelyn glanced back at me.

“I understand that my family abandoned me.”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“Your family did not forge those signatures.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

“No, Your Honor.”

“Your actions placed a child’s home and education at risk.

The sentence stands.”

An officer approached.

Evelyn turned toward David, who sat across the aisle.

“You could still ask them for mercy.”

David shook his head.

“I spent my whole life confusing mercy with obedience.”

She looked at Chloe.

“Your father would still have his family if your mother had stayed quiet.”

Chloe stood before I could stop her.

“My mother is my family.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

For once, she had no answer.

The officer guided her through the side door.

It closed after her without a sound.

In the hallway, Beckett Hale waited with his attorney.

He handed Naomi a signed settlement agreement.

“My company returned the lender’s advance,” he said.

“We also restored the amount traced from Chloe’s trust.”

“You ignored warnings about the signatures,” I said.

“I did.”

“And your title partnership?”

“Terminated.

I surrendered my management position this morning.”

Naomi checked the figures.

“This includes legal fees and the cost of securing the property.”

Beckett nodded.

“It does.”

I signed only after Naomi approved every page.

Ross stood near the elevators.

He held out the spare key Evelyn had given him.

“The prosecutor reduced my charge because I cooperated,” he said.

“I received probation and community service.”

“You still came to my house.”

“I know.”

“Why are you here?”

“To return this in front of you, even though it doesn’t open anything now.”

I took the key.

Ross looked toward Chloe.

“I’m sorry I frightened you.”

“You helped us afterward,” she said.

“That doesn’t erase the first part.”

“No,” Chloe replied.

“But it made the ending different.”

Ross nodded, then walked to the elevator.

David approached last.

He handed me a receipt showing the final court-ordered payment into Chloe’s restored trust.

“The divorce papers arrived,” he said.

“I signed them.”

“Naomi will review them.”

“I accepted supervised visits until the counselor says Chloe is ready for more.”

Chloe looked at him.

“I’m not ready yet.”

“I know.”

“But you can call me Sunday.”

David’s eyes filled.

“I’ll be waiting beside the phone.”

He did not reach for her.

He let Chloe decide.

May you like

She stepped forward and hugged him once, briefly.

When she returned to my side, David wiped his face and walked away alone.
