Chapter 2: The Message on David’s Phone

I pulled out my phone and recorded every word.

Then I photographed the man’s face, the envelope, and the key before sending everything to a private email account.

“Mom, are we calling Dad?” Chloe whispered.

“Not yet,” I said.

“First, we find out whether he already knows.”

That night, I moved the blue binder, our passports, and the jewelry box to a safe place.

I told David nothing.

He ate dinner beside Evelyn as if everything were normal.

The next morning, Chloe and I pretended to leave on schedule.

Then we quietly returned through the garage and waited inside with the alarm armed.

At 8:17, someone pushed a key into the back door.

David suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs, pale and breathless.

“What are you doing home?” I demanded.

Before he could answer, the lock turned again.

“David,” I whispered, holding up my phone, “who is trying to enter our house?”

He stared at the door.

“Hannah, don’t open it.”

“Why not?”

His eyes dropped to the floor.

Then his phone lit up with a message from Evelyn:

HE HAS THE SIGNED TRANSFER PAPER.

KEEP HANNAH AWAY FROM THE OFFICE.

I looked at David.

“What transfer paper?”

He opened his mouth, but the man outside suddenly called through the door:

“David, your mother said you’d already handled your wife’s signature.”

David froze.
