Instead, I lifted my phone and hit record.
My hands were shaking so badly I had to press them against the pillar to keep the video steady.
Chloe pressed herself flat against the column beside me, not making a sound.
For a child who couldn't sit still through a ten-minute car ride, she stood completely frozen for the next four minutes.
I got everything.
The cash.
The key.
Evelyn's face.
Every word.
That night, I said nothing to David.
I made dinner.
I helped Chloe with her homework.
I watched my mother-in-law's name light up on David's phone twice during the evening, and I watched him step outside to answer both calls.
He came back in smiling.
"Mom says she had a good appointment today.
Heart's looking better."
I nodded.
"That's great news."
I didn't sleep.
At 6:48 the next morning, David left for work.
At 7:15, I told Chloe school was cancelled and took her to my sister's house.
Then I came back, sat in the kitchen, and waited.
At 7:44, I heard the back door handle turn.
The alarm beeped once — then went silent.
Someone had entered the correct code.
I stepped into the hallway.
A man in a gray blazer was standing in my kitchen, holding a folded document and looking directly at me.
He hadn't expected me to be there.
Neither had the person who had just walked in behind him.
