Chapter 2: What Happened in Phoenix

Part 2 ⬇️
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
My mom's voice was low and steady — the kind of calm that's more frightening than any scream.
"Brenda," she said, "I know about the gym.
I know about the trainer.
And I know what happened in Phoenix three years ago."
Brenda's glass nearly slipped from her hand.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered.
My mom smiled wider.
"No?
Should I say it louder so the fifty people behind me can hear it too?"
Brenda's face went from white to grey.
Lucas had frozen completely.
He was staring at his mother like he was seeing a stranger.
"What is she talking about, Mom?" he asked quietly.
"What happened in Phoenix?"
Brenda said nothing.
She just grabbed her purse, pushed past two guests, and walked straight out the back gate without a single word.
The whole backyard watched her go.
My mom turned back to the crowd, raised her glass calmly, and said, "Now.
Let's celebrate this beautiful baby."
Everyone cheered — but I couldn't stop watching Lucas.
Because he wasn't cheering.
He was already on his phone, and his hands were shaking.
