Chapter 2: One Table. Twelve Chairs. Not One More.

The dining room was exactly as I had prepared it.
One table.
Twelve chairs.
Twelve plates.
Twelve place cards — each one with a name I had personally invited.

My mother-in-law spun around to face me, her voice rising.
"Where is everyone supposed to sit?
There are twenty more people coming!"
I looked at her calmly.
"I only set places for the guests I invited."
Her face went red.

He stopped.
My mother-in-law looked at the table again, then back at me.
Then she did something I didn't expect.
She pulled out her phone and started making a call.
I didn't know who she was calling.
But the way her hands were shaking — and the way my husband suddenly went pale when he saw the name on her screen — told me this was far from over.
---
What she did next — and who she called — changed everything that happened after.
