Chapter 1: The Table She Didn't Set

My mother-in-law has always treated every holiday like it was her event, even when it was hosted in my house.

She'd show up hours early, criticize the decorations, rearrange my dining table, and tell everyone, "My son would never celebrate like this if I didn't help." My husband would always laugh it off and say, "Just let her have this one day."

Every year it got worse.

She'd invite one or two relatives without asking, then apologize afterward by saying, "I didn't think you'd mind." Last Thanksgiving, she even gave people a tour of my house without telling me.

When I confronted her, she smiled and said, "You're acting like a guest in your own home."

This year I planned everything weeks in advance.

I carefully counted every chair, every plate, every serving, and every place card.

Then, two days before Thanksgiving, my husband's cousin accidentally let something slip.

He asked, "So...

where are all the extra people supposed to sit?"

I frowned.

"What extra people?"

He looked confused.

"Your mother-in-law said she invited almost twenty more guests because your house is the biggest."

I just stared at him.

Twenty.

She hadn't called me.

She hadn't texted me.

She hadn't even mentioned it.

That evening I asked my husband if he knew anything about it.

He rubbed the back of his neck and quietly admitted, "Mom mentioned it...

but I figured she'd already talked to you."

I didn't argue.

I didn't yell.

I simply smiled and said, "That's okay."

Thanksgiving finally arrived.

Right on schedule, cars started filling our driveway.

One after another, people I had never invited walked through my front door carrying pies, casseroles, desserts, and bottles of wine.

My mother-in-law walked in last, looked around proudly, and announced, "See?

I knew this house was big enough for everyone." She took off her coat, turned toward the dining room with a satisfied smile...

...and suddenly stopped.

She blinked.

She looked around again.

Then slowly turned to me.

"Oh my God!!!

What did you do?"
