Judge Bennett set the sealed file flat on the bench and looked at Evelyn's lead lawyer.
"Counselor, are you aware of Mrs.
Hayes's professional background?"
The lawyer shifted in his seat.
"We are not, Your Honor.
It wasn't disclosed."
"It's in the public record," the judge said quietly.
"It has been for thirty years."
Evelyn leaned toward her attorney and whispered something sharp.
He didn't answer her.
Judge Bennett looked at me.
"Mrs.
Hayes, you practiced family and estate law in Virginia for how long?"
"Twenty-six years," I said.
"I retired when Frank's treatment began."
The courtroom went very still.
Anna turned to look at me.
I had never hidden it from her, but I had never made it part of this fight either.
I hadn't needed to.
Frank had known exactly what he was signing.
I had made sure of that.
Evelyn stood halfway out of her chair.
"She never told us.
She let Frank—"
"Sit down," Judge Bennett said.
One of her lawyers put a hand on Evelyn's arm.
Another was already flipping back through his own documents, checking something with a look I recognized.
He had just realized the dates didn't work the way he had argued.
Then Anna's phone lit up on the bench beside her.
She glanced down, and her face changed.
"Mom," she whispered.
"Someone just sent me a photo.
It's…
it's Dad.
And it's dated three weeks before he signed anything."
