Chapter 2: The Deed She Never Knew About

"This is Ethan's house," Colleen said.
"Not yours."
I couldn't move.
I just stood there in the driveway while the movers kept walking past me like I wasn't even there.
"Excuse me?"
"The deed is in Ethan's name, Brooke.
Always has been." She tilted her head slightly.
"He bought this house before you.
Did he never mention that?"
My throat went dry.
"That doesn't give you the right to remove my belongings."
She smiled — that same calm, practiced smile.
"I'm not removing your belongings.
I'm helping my son reclaim his space.
He asked me to."
The words hit me like ice water.
I pulled out my phone and called Ethan.
It rang twice.
He picked up.
"Ethan — did you tell your mother she could take our furniture?"
A pause.
Too long.
"Brooke, we need to talk when I get home."
"Tell me now."
Another pause.
"Mom's just trying to help.
We've been having some issues and I—"
"What issues?
What are you not telling me?"
He went quiet.
That's when Colleen stepped closer and said something so quietly only I could hear it.
And I realized this had never been about the furniture at all.
