Chapter 1: The Woman Who Knew Whose House It Was

My mother-in-law came to stay with us for a few weeks.

Then one day, I came home early and saw movers carrying my furniture out — and what she told me next made my bl00d boil.

My name is Brooke.

I'm 39, and I've been married to Ethan for seven years.

We have a happy marriage, and I'd always gotten along with his mother, Colleen.

We weren't especially close, but she'd welcomed me into the family from the start.

There was just one thing everyone knew about her: her house, her rules.

Colleen hated people moving her things.

Whenever we visited, I was careful not to touch anything without asking.

It was her home, and I respected that.

So when Ethan told me Colleen needed somewhere to stay while her kitchen and bathroom were being renovated, I agreed without hesitation.

At first, everything was fine.

Then I came home one evening and couldn't find anything in my kitchen.

Colleen had rearranged every cabinet.

"This makes much more sense," she said.

It bothered me, but I let it go.

A few days later, she reorganized my closet.

"An organized woman should have an organized wardrobe." This time, I asked her not to move my things.

"Of course, sweetheart," she smiled.

"I'm sorry."

That evening, Ethan seemed annoyed.

"Mom says she's afraid she's bothering you."

I was confused.

Colleen hadn't seemed upset at all.

Then one afternoon, I came home and found several of my houseplants gone.

Colleen had thrown them away.

"They didn't suit the room," she said.

"You really should be more careful with your decorating."

I couldn't stay quiet anymore.

"Colleen, please don't throw away my things.

This is our home."

She looked at me strangely.

"Yours and Ethan's?" Then she smiled.

"Of course.

I'm sorry."

That evening, Ethan confronted me in front of her.

"Why are you treating Mom like this?

She says she's afraid to touch anything because you'll criticize her."

"She threw away my things!"

"She was trying to help, Brooke.

You're acting like a tyrant."

I stared at him.

I couldn't believe his mother had somehow made me the problem.

Then Colleen gently touched his arm.

"Please, Ethan.

Don't fight with your wife because of me."

But when he turned away, she looked straight at me and smiled.

That's when I realized she knew exactly what she was doing.

The next morning, I left for work without saying another word.

A few hours later, I unexpectedly got off early.

As I pulled up to our house, I saw a moving truck outside.

Then I saw two men carrying my favorite couch toward it.

And standing in the driveway, calmly directing them on what to take next, was Colleen.

I jumped out of my car.

"What are you doing?!

Why are they taking my furniture?"

Colleen turned toward me.

For once, there was no innocent smile.

No sweet apology.

She looked me straight in the eyes and answered.

And what she said was the last thing I ever expected to hear in my own home.
