The room felt like it stopped breathing.
Daniel's father, Robert, was still holding the report.
His hands were steady.
His face was not.
"I asked you a question, son."
Daniel looked at the floor.
"Dad, this isn't the time."
"Then when is the time?" Robert's voice dropped low.
"Because I recognize that name.
That doctor retired two years ago.
He was my doctor.
And he never treated you."
Evelyn grabbed her husband's arm.
"Robert, stop."
He pulled away from her.
"How long have you known?" he asked Daniel.
Silence.
Daniel's sister stood up from her chair.
"Known what?
Someone tell me what is happening."
Robert set the paper down slowly.
He looked at Evelyn.
"Did you know about this?"
Evelyn's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I watched her face change.
For the first time all evening, she looked afraid.
Not of me.
Of her husband.
"Robert—"
"Answer me, Evelyn."
She sat down hard.
Daniel finally looked up.
His eyes were red.
"I found out eight months ago," he said quietly.
"I went to Dad's old doctor because I didn't want anyone to know.
He told me to keep it private."
Robert's jaw tightened.
"Eight months." He turned to me.
"And you, Sarah.
You knew?"
"He begged me not to say anything," I said.
"So I didn't.
Until tonight."
Robert picked up the silver rattle from the floor.
He placed it gently back on the table.
Then he said something that made Evelyn go completely pale.
