Chapter 1: The Rattle on the Table

"My Mother-In-Law Called Me Barren At Dinner, Until The Clinic Report Proved Her Son Was The Problem.

Evelyn Placed Baby Clothes On The Table In Front Of The Whole Family, Called Me Useless, And Sl@pped Me Because I Had Not Given Her A Grandchild After Three Years Of Marriage.

Daniel Just Stood There And Told His Mother To Calm Down, But Never Defended Me.

So I Opened My Purse And Pulled Out The Fertility Clinic Report He Begged Me To Hide.

The First Page Proved I Could Have Children.

The Second Page Proved Daniel Could Not—And Then His Father Noticed His Own Doctor's Name On The Report.

The dinner started badly before I even sat down.

Evelyn had invited Daniel's entire family to her house in Dallas.

I thought it was just another Sunday meal.

Then I saw the baby clothes folded on the table.

Tiny socks.

A blue blanket.

A silver rattle.

My stomach tightened.

Evelyn smiled at me.

"Do you know what these are?"

I stayed quiet.

She picked up the rattle and shook it once.

"They are for the grandchild I may never have because of you."

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at his plate.

I looked at him, waiting for him to defend me.

He did not.

Evelyn stood up.

"Three years of marriage, and still nothing."

I whispered, "This is private."

She laughed.

"Private?

My son's bloodline is dying because you are broken."

My hands clenched under the table.

"I am not broken."

Evelyn stepped around the table.

"You are barren."

Then she sl@pped me.

Hard.

My cheek burned, and the silver rattle rolled off the table.

Daniel finally stood.

But not for me.

"Mom, calm down."

I looked at him.

"That is all you have to say?"

Evelyn pointed at the door.

"Leave my son before you ruin his life."

Something inside me went cold.

I opened my purse.

Daniel's face changed immediately.

"Sarah, don't."

Evelyn looked confused.

"Don't what?"

I pulled out a sealed envelope from the fertility clinic.

Daniel moved toward me.

"Put that away."

I backed up.

"No.

Your mother wanted the truth in front of everyone."

His sister whispered, "Daniel?"

I opened the report with shaking hands.

My voice stayed steady.

"We both got tested."

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

"And?"

I placed the paper on the table.

"The doctor said I can have children."

Daniel looked like he might be sick.

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

I slid the second page toward her.

"But your son's results came back first."

No one breathed.

Evelyn picked up the paper.

Her hands started shaking as she read the words.

Then Daniel's father stood slowly and said, "Daniel…

why does this report have my doctor's name on it too?"

---

What did Daniel's father already know — and why was his own doctor's name on that report?
