Chapter 4: The Woman Who Planned Everything

They found Claire Bennett forty minutes later.

She was in the groundskeeper's cottage at the eastern edge of the property, sitting at a wooden table with a cup of tea she had made herself and a phone that had already been wiped.

She looked up when Dominic walked through the door.

She did not look surprised.

She did not look frightened.

She looked like a woman who had prepared for this exact moment and decided, somewhere along the way, that composure was the only card she had left.

"I'd like my coat," she said.

"It's cold in here."

Marcus set it on the table without a word.

Dominic sat down across from her.

Daniel stood at the door.

No one else entered.

"Victor Renner," Dominic said.

Claire wrapped both hands around the teacup.

"I don't know what Nathan told you, but whatever it was, he was protecting himself."

"Mia heard you on the phone.

Three weeks ago.

East study."

Something moved across Claire's face.

Not guilt.

Recalculation.

"A housekeeper," she said.

"You're going to take the word of a housekeeper over the woman you were going to marry."

"I'm going to take the word of a woman who was locked in my cellar for three days over the woman who put her there."

Claire set the teacup down.

"She was going to ruin everything," she said.

"She heard one phone call and she had no idea what she was actually hearing.

I needed time.

I needed her contained until after the wedding, and then I would have let her go.

She was never going to be hurt."

"Her wrists say otherwise."

"That was Nathan.

I told him to make sure she was comfortable."

"You told him that if she made noise, her daughter would be next."

The cottage was very quiet.

Wind moved against the single window.

"I want my attorney," Claire said.

"You said that already." Dominic leaned back.

"Here's what I know.

You've been in contact with Victor Renner for at least fourteen months.

You came into this house with a purpose.

The engagement was not accidental." He paused.

"What I don't know yet is whether Renner recruited you before you met me, or whether you went to him after."

Claire said nothing.

"It matters," Dominic said, "because one of those answers tells me how deep this goes.

And the other one tells me you're smarter than I gave you credit for."

She looked at him across the table.

For the first time, something shifted behind her eyes.

Not remorse.

Something closer to professional respect.

"Before," she said.

"He recruited me before.

He knew you'd be at the Carlisle event in February two years ago.

He knew your profile.

He asked me to make contact and build something real.

Something that would hold up."

"And the wedding date."

"Renner needed the legal access.

Once we were married, I could authorize transfers under your corporate structure without triggering your internal review.

The amounts he needed moved were too large to do any other way."

"How large."

She told him.

The number was large enough that Daniel shifted his weight at the door.

"And Nathan," Dominic said.

"Nathan was a problem I managed.

He's loyal to you, which made him dangerous.

I needed him occupied, doubting himself, convinced he was the one being protected." She almost smiled.

"He's a good man.

That made him easy."

Dominic stood.

"One more question."

"Go ahead."

"The name inside my operation.

The one you told Nathan was him.

Who is it actually?"

Claire looked at the table.

"I'd like to discuss that with my attorney present."

Dominic nodded slowly.

He picked up the wiped phone from the table and handed it to Daniel.

"Get the technical team on this.

Everything recoverable."

He walked to the door, then stopped.

"You planned this for two years," he said, without turning around.

"You were good at it.

I want you to know that I understand that." He paused.

"It still ends the same way."

He walked out into the cold morning.

Behind him, Claire picked up the teacup again.

Her hands, for the first time, were not entirely steady.
