Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Dominic didn't answer Nathan.

He turned slowly.

The cellar light caught his face, and every man in that corridor took one step back.

"You approved the lock," Dominic said.

"Dom, I had no idea she was—"

"You approved the lock.

You told Harper her mother was fine.

For three days."

Nathan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mia's hand found Dominic's arm.

Her grip was weak, but her voice was steady.

"It wasn't just Nathan."

The room went still.

"Claire came down first.

She said you had given orders.

That I had seen something I wasn't supposed to see." Mia stopped to breathe.

"She said if I made noise, Harper would be next."

Harper pressed tighter against her mother's chest.

Dominic stood.

He walked to Nathan until there was almost no space between them.

"Seventeen years," he said quietly.

"And you let a child knock on that door alone for three nights."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what's at stake."

"Tell me."

Nathan said nothing.

Then Dominic's phone rang.

The screen lit up the dark corridor.

The name on the display was Claire.

Dominic looked at Nathan.

Nathan looked at the phone.

And in that half second, Dominic saw everything he needed to see.
