Chapter 2: What She Kept in Her Purse

I stood frozen in that restroom, staring at my mom.
She reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I've known about this family for three weeks," she said quietly.
"I didn't want to ruin things until I was sure."
My hands were shaking as I unfolded it.
It was a printout.
A legal document.
With my fiance's father's name at the top.
"Mom, what is this?"
"That family didn't build their money honestly, sweetheart.
And the woman out there who called my dress 'comfortable'?" She paused.
"She knows exactly what her husband did.
And she knows I know."
My stomach turned.
Suddenly the forced smile made sense.
The little comments.
The way his mother had watched my mom all evening — not with amusement.
With fear.
I looked up.
"Does he know?
Does Daniel know?"
Mom's expression told me everything before she said a word.
"That's what you need to find out tonight."
We walked back out together.
And the moment we reached the table, his mother's face went completely white.
She had seen the paper in my hand.
