Chapter 1: The Dress She Chose on Purpose

My mom showed up to my engagement dinner wearing the cheapest-looking dress in her closet — I was embarrassed until she explained why she was really doing it.

My fiance's parents had invited both families to an expensive restaurant to celebrate our engagement.

I'd been anxious all week.

His family had money.

Not flashy money, but the kind you noticed in everything — the house, the vacations, the restaurants they considered "casual."

My mom was different.

She'd raised me alone, worked two jobs when I was little, and never cared much about expensive things.

But she always looked neat.

That's why my stomach dropped when she stepped into the restaurant wearing an old floral dress I hadn't seen in years.

It was faded, old-fashioned, and looked completely out of place in that restaurant.

My fiance's mother looked her up and down before forcing a smile.

"Oh," she said.

"How…

comfortable."

I wanted to disappear.

During dinner, the little comments kept coming.

His mother mentioned the price of the wine, talked about the country club, then asked my mom whether she'd ever eaten at a restaurant "like this" before.

My mom just smiled.

She didn't defend herself once.

By dessert, I couldn't take it anymore.

When Mom excused herself, I followed her into the restroom.

"Mom, what is going on?

You have nicer clothes.

Why would you wear that tonight?"

She looked at me through the mirror.

"You're embarrassed?"

"A little.

I wanted to make a good impression."

To my surprise, she smiled.

Then she leaned closer and lowered her voice.

"Honey, I didn't choose this dress by accident."

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

Her smile disappeared.

Then she told me why she had dressed that way.

And suddenly, I needed to get back to that table before dessert was served.
