Chapter 1: The Dinner She Threw Away

My MIL threw away the dinner I'd ordered while I was sick and said, "A good wife cooks for her family herself!"—my husband's elegant lesson left her red with rage.

Last Tuesday, I woke up with a 102-degree fever, aching muscles, and a throat so sore I could barely swallow.

My husband, Nathan, wanted to stay home, but I convinced him to go to work.

"Stay in bed," he said before leaving.

"Order dinner for everyone.

Don't even look at the stove."

By five, when our two kids returned from school, they were hungry, so I ordered chicken soup for myself, pasta for them, and Nathan's favorite steak dinner.

Then my MIL, Angela, showed up unexpectedly.

She took one look at my pajamas and frowned.

"It's five o'clock.

You're still in bed?"

"I have a fever, Angela."

Before I could say more, the doorbell rang.

"That's dinner.

Could you please bring it in?"

Ten minutes passed.

When I finally dragged myself downstairs, I found Angela standing over the kitchen trash can.

My heart dropped.

Every container I'd ordered was inside it.

The kids' pasta.

Nathan's steak.

Even my unopened soup.

"Angela!

What are you doing?"

She wiped her hands as calmly as if she'd just finished washing dishes.

"Saving my son from eating takeout because his wife is too lazy to cook!"

"I'm sick..."

She glanced at the stove.

"A good wife cooks for her family.

Now get up and make dinner yourself."

I was too stunned to respond.

Nathan came home twenty minutes later and found me crying in the kitchen while our hungry kids ate crackers.

When he saw $90 worth of untouched food in the trash, his expression changed.

"Mom, did you do this?"

Angela folded her arms.

"Someone had to remind your wife what marriage means."

I expected Nathan to explode.

Instead, he became strangely calm.

Then he smiled.

"You know what, Mom?

You're absolutely right."

Angela's face lit up.

"Actually, thank you for looking out for me.

If takeout is so unacceptable, I think you deserve a little gift for always caring so much about my needs."

He pulled out his phone.

"I just need to make one call."

Angela smiled smugly.

"Anything for my boy."

I had no idea what Nathan was doing.

Less than twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Nathan went to answer it.

"Come in," I heard him say.

Angela was still smiling when footsteps approached the kitchen.

Then she saw the woman Nathan had invited inside.

Her smile vanished.

The color drained from her face.

"Nathan," she whispered.

"What is she doing here?"

Nathan said nothing.

Angela suddenly shot to her feet, her face turning crimson.

"How could you do this to your own mother?"

Who is the woman Nathan brought to the door — and why did Angela go pale the moment she saw her?
