Chapter 2: What Was Taped Inside the Balloon

It wasn't confetti on the garage floor.

It was an envelope.

Thick.

Unsealed.

And covered in my husband's handwriting.

My MIL was still on the phone behind me, her voice shaking.

"There's a letter.

I don't know what it means, but you need to come."

I picked it up with trembling hands.

Inside were documents.

Three pages.

A name I didn't recognize at the top.

And a date — four months before our wedding.

"What is this?" I turned around and held it up.

My MIL had ended the call.

She was staring at the papers, not at me.

"I didn't know," she said quietly.

"I swear I didn't know."

"Know what?" My voice cracked.

"What is in here?"

She looked up.

Her eyes were wet.

"That's not the balloon company's envelope," she said.

"That was taped inside the balloon."

I looked back at the documents.

The name at the top wasn't mine.

It was another woman's name.

And below it — a child's name.

A boy.

Age three.

My husband appeared in the garage doorway.

He saw what I was holding.

He didn't say a word.

He just went completely still.
