Chapter 1: The Balloon She Couldn't Leave Alone

My MIL stole our gender reveal balloon and took it into the garage to open it — moments after I heard it pop, she rushed back inside, pale-faced, and screamed, "I'm calling the police!"

My MIL has always been the kind of person who needs to know everything first.

When I got pregnant, she wanted updates after every appointment.

When we told her we were planning a gender reveal, she became even worse.

"Just tell me," she begged almost every day.

"I'm the grandmother.

I should know before everyone else."

My husband kept telling her no.

"We're all finding out together, Mom."

But I already had a feeling she wouldn't leave it alone.

The day of the party, family and friends started arriving at our house in the afternoon.

In the living room was one large black balloon filled with either pink or blue confetti.

Only the employee who prepared it knew what was inside.

While guests were still coming in, my husband and I stepped outside for a few photos.

That's when I spotted my MIL through the window.

She grabbed the balloon.

Then she hurried toward the garage.

"Wait!" I shouted.

A couple of guests noticed too.

My husband and I rushed inside, but she had already shut the garage door behind her.

"Mom, don't!" he yelled.

Then we heard it.

Pop.

I was furious.

She had just ruined the moment we'd been waiting for.

But a few seconds later, the garage door flew open.

My MIL stumbled out, pale as a sheet.

She was clutching her phone.

"I'm calling the police!"

Everyone went silent.

"What happened?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

She was already dialing.

So I pushed past her and ran into the garage myself.

I looked inside and froze.
