Chapter 2: The Photograph in Her Hands

Part 2 ⬇️
The room went completely still.
My husband grabbed Carol's arm.
"Mom.
What are you talking about?
What's wrong with her arm?"
Carol couldn't speak.
She just kept shaking her head, tears running down her face.
I pulled myself up from the bed and looked at our daughter's arm myself.
There was a small birthmark.
Dark.
Shaped almost like a crescent.
I didn't understand.
It was just a birthmark.
But Carol looked at it like she was seeing a gh0st.
My husband's voice dropped low.
"Mom.
Tell me right now."
Carol finally whispered: "That mark…
your father had the exact same one.
In the exact same place."
My husband froze.
"Dad has been g0ne for fifteen years," he said slowly.
"What does that have to do with our daughter?"
Carol looked at him with the most broken expression I have ever seen on a person's face.
"Because your father didn't only have one family."
The silence that followed was the loudest thing I have ever heard.
Then Carol reached into her bag with shaking hands…
and pulled out an old photograph.
She held it up.
And my husband went completely white.
---
What's in that photograph — and what has Carol been hiding for fifteen years?
The truth is more devastating than anyone in that room was prepared for.
