Chapter 1: The Mark She Couldn't Explain

My MIL saw my newborn daughter for the first time, went pale, and told us to give her up — when I found out why, I nearly fainted.

I absolutely love my MIL, Carol, and we've always had a wonderful relationship.

It's one of those rare cases where your MIL becomes almost like a second mom to you.

When she found out I was pregnant, you should've seen how happy she was.

She cried tears of joy.

She kept buying things for the baby, helped us repaint the nursery pink when we found out we were having a girl, and went shopping with me for everything we needed.

And during the last few months of my pregnancy, she even came over to help with cleaning or cooking.

It was such an incredible time.

The delivery was difficult, but thankfully, everything went well.

I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl.

God, I was so happy when I finally held her in my arms.

They moved us to a room so we could rest, and visitors weren't allowed in yet.

The next day, my husband came in with flowers and held our little girl for the first time.

He couldn't stop smiling.

Then Carol called and said she'd be there in an hour.

She arrived with a pile of gifts, looking so happy.

Carol stepped over to the bassinet and SUDDENLY went quiet.

I watched the color drain from her face.

When I asked Carol what was wrong and whether she was feeling okay, she looked at me with a blank expression and said:

"This is going to sound horrible, but you CAN'T keep this little girl."

My heart started pounding.

I said:

"Carol, what are you talking about?!

This is your granddaughter!"

My husband stood there in shock.

It was clear he had no idea what was going on either.

Then tears started streaming down Carol's face as she screamed:

"LOOK AT HER ARM!

You can't keep her.

You just can't!

Trust me!"

When Carol finally explained WHAT WAS GOING ON, a nurse had to call a doctor because I suddenly felt faint.

It was WORSE THAN ANYTHING I COULD HAVE IMAGINED.

What did Carol see on that little girl's arm — and what secret has she been hiding all this time?
