Chapter 2: Labs Make Mistakes

Bryson set the paper down on the table.
His hands weren't steady.
I asked him what it said.
He didn't answer right away.
He just stared at the results like the words weren't making sense.
"Bryson.
What does it say?"
He finally looked up.
"Stella is mine.
One hundred percent."
I felt the air leave my body.
Then Gianna reached over and snatched the paper herself.
She read it.
Read it again.
Her face didn't soften.
It hardened.
"Labs make mistakes," she said.
I couldn't speak.
After everything — the accusations, the months of being treated like a liar, watching my own husband doubt me — that was all she had.
"Labs make mistakes."
Bryson stood up slowly.
"Mom.
Stop."
But Gianna wasn't finished.
She set the paper down and looked directly at me.
"I want a second test.
From a different lab."
That's when something shifted in Bryson's face.
Something I hadn't seen before.
He picked up the results, folded them carefully, and slid them into his jacket pocket.
Then he said something to his mother that made her go completely silent.
And it wasn't about the test.
