Chapter 1: The Words She Never Took Back
My MIL refused to call my baby her grandchild, saying, "I won't let you pass another man's baby off as my son's." — so I agreed to a DNA test, but when the results arrived, my husband read them twice, then quietly said, "I can't believe this is real."
My MIL, Gianna, had never really liked me.
From the start, she found ways to make that clear.
She'd tell Bryson, my husband, "You could've found someone more ambitious," or glance around our home and casually ask me, "Does Bryson really come home to this every day?"
Her comments hurt, but I tried not to let them get to me because Bryson and I were happy together, and that mattered more.
So when I found out I was pregnant, we were both incredibly excited.
My pregnancy went smoothly, and nine months later, I gave birth to our healthy daughter, Stella.
She had bright red hair and blue eyes, while Bryson and I both had dark hair and brown eyes.
I thought she was perfect.
Gianna apparently saw something else.
At first, she made little comments about how Stella "didn't look like Bryson." I tried to ignore them, but within weeks, she stopped calling Stella her granddaughter altogether.
Then, during one visit, Gianna finally said exactly what she believed.
"That baby looks nothing like my son.
I won't let you pass another man's baby off as my son's."
I was speechless.
Gianna immediately demanded a DNA test, but what hurt most was Bryson's reaction.
Instead of defending me, he stayed silent before finally admitting that maybe his mother had a point and that a test would settle everything.
His doubt hurt more than anything Gianna had said, but I knew I had nothing to hide, so despite how betrayed I felt, I agreed to the test.
A few days later, the results arrived.
I was still so hurt that I didn't even open them.
I simply handed the envelope to Bryson.
He read the results once, then again.
His expression slowly changed.
Finally, he looked up at me and quietly said,
"I can't believe this is real."
