Chapter 1: The Photo She Never Should Have Taken

My MIL posted a photo of me sick in bed to shame me for "sleeping until noon"—days later, my husband woke me before dawn and whispered, "Honey, it's time mom learned a lesson.

You need to see this."

I'm normally awake by six every morning.

I make coffee, pack my husband's lunch, start laundry if there's any, and I'm usually answering work emails before seven.

So when I was still in bed at 11:30 last Tuesday, there was a reason.

I'd spent the night with a 102-degree fever, chills, and a cough so painful my ribs hurt.

My doctor told me to stay in bed, drink fluids, and rest.

Before leaving for work, my husband, Nathan, brought me medicine and made me promise not to touch a single chore.

I was finally asleep when our bedroom door suddenly flew open.

My MIL, Patricia, stood there holding the spare key we'd given her for emergencies.

"Almost noon?" she exclaimed.

"Nathan's at work and you're still lying in bed?"

I could barely sit up.

"I'm sick, Patricia."

She glanced at the tissues and medicine beside me.

"We all get sick.

That doesn't mean the house stops running.

Get up, take a shower, and make your husband a proper dinner."

Then she did something I couldn't believe.

She pulled out her phone and took my picture.

"Patricia, don't!"

She ignored me.

Ten minutes after she left, my phone started buzzing.

She'd posted the photo on Facebook.

"Good morning to everyone who actually gets up, goes to work, and takes care of their family instead of sleeping until noon like my DIL."

I cried from humiliation when I saw the comments.

When Nathan came home, I expected him to call his mother right away.

Instead, he stared at her post for a long time before calmly saying, "Don't respond.

Please trust me."

For several days, he said nothing else.

I was getting better, but what Patricia had done still stung.

Then, at 4:45 one morning, Nathan gently shook me awake.

"Honey, get dressed."

I blinked at him.

"What?"

He was already holding his car keys.

"Please come with me.

You need to see this."

Twenty minutes later, we pulled up outside Patricia's house.

I stared at him, confused.

Nathan quietly unlocked her front door with the emergency key she'd given him years earlier and motioned for me to follow.

The house was completely dark.

We crept down the hallway until he stopped outside his mother's bedroom.

Then Nathan looked at me, smiled slightly, and reached for the doorknob.

What my husband did next made Patricia turn red — and taught her a lesson she never forgot.

What did Nathan find inside that room?
