Chapter 2: Something She Needed to Find

We reached the doorway and stopped.
Kathryn was standing in the middle of the room, her face white, her hand pressed to her chest.
On the floor in front of her was the open drawer — and scattered around it, a dozen printed photos.
Photos of her.

"What is this?" Austin said.
"I set up a small camera," I said calmly.
"After the third time she went through my things, I needed proof."
Kathryn's mouth opened and closed.

"I was looking for something specific." Her voice had changed.
Quieter.
Almost careful.
"Something I needed to find before it was too late."
Austin went very still.
"Mom," he said slowly.
"What are you talking about?"
She didn't answer.
But the look she gave him — not me, him — told me this wasn't about boundaries at all.
There was something in that bedroom she was searching for.
And Austin already knew what it was.

What was Kathryn really looking for — and why does Austin know?
The answer changes everything.
