Chapter 1: The Drawer She Wasn't Supposed to Touch

My MIL kept sneaking into our bedroom and going through my underwear drawer every time she visited — so one day, I set a trap she never saw coming.

When I married Austin, I already knew his mother, Kathryn, had absolutely no concept of personal boundaries.

She'd come over and open our cabinets, move things around, and wander into rooms without knocking.

For a while, I tried to let it go.

Then I noticed something I couldn't ignore.

Every time Kathryn visited, something was different in my underwear drawer.

Things I'd folded a certain way had been moved.

Some items were rearranged.

A few even ended up in the wrong drawer.

The first time, I thought maybe I'd forgotten.

Then it happened again.

And again.

Eventually, there was no doubt.

My mother-in-law was going into our bedroom and digging through my underwear.

I told Austin, expecting him to be as disturbed as I was.

Instead, he barely glanced up from his phone.

"She's my mother.

If she wants to check that you're taking proper care of our home, she has every right to."

I honestly couldn't believe he said that.

That was when I realized I had two problems.

Kathryn had no respect for my privacy, and my own husband apparently didn't think I deserved any.

So I stopped arguing.

The next time Kathryn came over, I greeted her with a smile and acted like everything was perfectly fine.

Eventually, just as I'd expected, I watched her slip down the hallway toward our bedroom.

I didn't stop her.

Because the night before, I'd prepared something specifically for this visit.

A few minutes later, a scream came from upstairs.

My name.

Repeatedly.

Austin jumped up, and we both rushed toward the bedroom.

What did she find in that drawer?
