Chapter 2: You Found It

She picked up on the second ring.
"Margaret…
what did you put in that plant?"
Silence.
Then, very quietly: "You found it."
Not *what are you talking about.* Not *what do you mean.* Just — *you found it.*
My legs went weak.
I sat down right there on the kitchen floor, surrounded by dirt, staring at what I'd pulled from the soil.
It was a small waterproof pouch, sealed tight.
Inside was a folded piece of paper and something hard wrapped in cloth.
"Margaret, what is this?
Why is it buried in my house?"
She took a long breath.
"I couldn't tell Nolan.
I needed someone to have it — someone I trusted — in case something happened to me."
"In case something *happened* to you?" My voice cracked.
"What does that mean?"
"Open the cloth first," she said.
"Then call me back."
I unwrapped it with one hand, phone pressed to my ear.
And the moment I saw what was inside, I understood why she hadn't told her own son.
Because this wasn't just a secret.
This was something Nolan's family had buried a long time ago — and someone had spent years making sure it stayed hidden.
