Chapter 1: The Thing Buried in the Soil

My MIL gifted me a beautiful potted plant for my new house — but when I repotted it months later, I was stunned by what I found buried in the soil.

When my husband, Nolan, and I first started dating, my mother-in-law, Margaret, was pretty distant.

We didn't exactly click.

But after we got married, things shifted.

She softened, and we actually started building a genuine bond.

When our son, Leo, was born two years ago, Margaret became a huge help.

She visited our apartment often — not to overstep, but to actually support us.

She brought groceries, folded laundry, and watched the baby so I could catch up on sleep.

She became someone I could truly rely on, and we got along great.

Eventually, our two-bedroom apartment just became too small for a growing toddler.

Nolan and I saved up, and last spring, we finally bought our first house.

Margaret was really happy for us.

At our housewarming party, she arrived with a beautiful Peace Lily in a large ceramic pot.

She hugged me and said it was a gift to bring good energy to our new family home.

I appreciated the gesture and placed it right by our living room window.

For six months, the plant did great.

But recently, a few leaves started turning yellow, and roots began poking out of the drainage holes.

It just needed a bigger pot.

Yesterday morning, while Nolan was at work and Leo was napping, I spread some old newspaper across the kitchen floor.

I tipped the heavy pot on its side and gently tugged the plant, but it was stuck.

I grabbed a small trowel and dug into the soil to loosen the edges.

As the root ball finally broke free and the dirt spilled across the floor, something dropped onto the tiles with a dull thud.

I knelt down and brushed the damp soil away.

The moment I realized what I was looking at, I grabbed my phone and called Margaret, my hands shaking.

What was buried in that pot — and why did it make her hands shake?
