Chapter 2: What He Pulled From His Pocket

Matthew dropped the necklace into Susan's glass of wine.
It sank straight to the bottom.
Nobody moved.
Susan stared at her glass, then at him.
"What do you think you're—"
"You're done," Matthew said.
Quietly.
No anger in his voice.
That was the part that scared everyone.
He turned to me.
"I'm sorry.
I should have done this a long time ago."
Susan pushed back her chair.
"Matthew, I made that as a gift—"
"You made it as a weapon," he said.
"And we both know it."
Thomas put his hand over mine under the table.
I could feel him shaking.
Then Susan said something that changed the entire room.
"If she can't give you grandchildren, maybe Thomas should have married someone who could."
No one breathed.
Matthew stood up slowly.
"Sit down," Thomas said, his voice low.
But Matthew wasn't looking at Susan anymore.
He was looking at Thomas.
And the expression on his face was something I had never seen before.
Like he had been waiting to say something for a very long time.
"There's something your mother doesn't know I know," he said.
"Something that changes everything she just said."
Susan went pale.
"Matthew.
Don't."
But he was already reaching into his jacket pocket.
