Chapter 1: The Gift She Made to Wound Me

My MIL gave me a necklace made of tiny baby bottles and pacifiers, knowing I couldn't have children—what my FIL did next silenced the room.
My husband, Thomas, and I had spent four years trying to have a baby.
There were injections, procedures, two failed rounds of IVF, and endless disappointment.
The worst day came when a specialist finally told me that carrying a child was almost impossible.
I stopped going to baby showers for a while.
Thomas understood.
His mother, Susan, did not.
She knew everything, yet somehow my infertility became her favorite subject for "jokes."
Whenever someone announced a pregnancy, she'd glance at me and say, "Some women are just luckier than others."
At Christmas, she once handed me wine and laughed.
"At least you never have to give this up for nine months."
Thomas told her to stop every time.
Susan always shrugged.
"Relax.
She knows I don't mean anything by it."
So when she arrived at my thirty-fifth birthday dinner carrying a velvet jewelry box, I honestly thought she was trying to make peace.
"I had this made especially for you," she said.
Everyone leaned closer.
I opened the lid.
Inside was a handmade necklace strung with tiny pink and blue plastic baby bottles and miniature pacifiers.
For a second, I couldn't breathe.
Then Susan laughed.
"Come on!
It's cute."
Nobody else made a sound.
She lifted one of the tiny bottles between two fingers.
"Since you'll never need the real ones, I thought you should at least get to wear them."
Thomas's chair scraped against the floor.
"Mom, what the hell is wrong with you?"
My eyes burned, but I refused to cry in front of her.
Susan rolled her eyes.
"It's a joke.
She's always so sensitive about this."
That was when my father-in-law, Matthew, quietly set down his fork.
For years, whenever Susan crossed a line, he'd been the one saying, "That's just how she is."
Not this time.
He picked up the necklace.
"You had this made?" he asked.
Susan smiled, clearly expecting him to defend her.
"Of course.
Took me forever to find those little bottles."
Matthew looked at her steadily.
Then he said, "Good.
So you had plenty of time to think about what you were doing."
Susan's smile vanished.
"Matthew..."
He reached for the velvet box.
Thomas started to speak, but his father raised one hand.
"No, son.
Let me handle this."
Then Matthew did something none of us expected.
Susan screamed.
Everyone in the room gasped.
