Chapter 1: The Cruise She Wasn't Invited On

My MIL crashed our 10th anniversary cruise because she "wanted to spend more time with her son" — so I made my move.
In almost 10 years of marriage to my husband, Gary, we'd never really gone anywhere.
Three kids.
A mortgage.
Bills.
Then Gary lost his job.
So vacations were something we always had to cut back on.
But as our 10th wedding anniversary was approaching, Gary came to me and handed me an envelope.
Inside was a booking for a cruise for just the TWO of us on a huge ocean liner.
Oh, I was so happy.
Then, a few days before we were supposed to leave, my MIL, Donna, showed up at our house with suitcases and said:
"Oh, so are you ready for vacation?
Because I AM!"
I asked:
"Donna, I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, but what are you doing here?"
She looked at me and said:
"As soon as Gary told me he'd booked the trip, I BOUGHT A TICKET TOO.
I even got a cabin right next to yours."
My stomach dropped.
Donna had ALWAYS interfered in our family.
Even before the wedding, she made it clear that she didn't think I was GOOD ENOUGH for her son.
And every time she came to our house, she told me I cooked wrong, cleaned wrong, and raised the kids wrong.
There was ALWAYS SOMETHING about me she didn't like.
When I told her that Gary had booked this trip just for the two of us, she raised her eyebrows and said:
"Well, I want a vacation too.
And I want to spend more time with my son.
So I'M GOING."
And she did.
She turned the entire trip into HELL.
Gary took me to dinner for our anniversary, and she sat down at the table with us.
We went to the pool in the morning, and she came with us again and constantly asked me to BRING HER COCKTAILS.
Often, she didn't even knock on our cabin door.
She would just walk right in (if I forgot to lock it) and constantly call Gary to go somewhere with her.
When I asked her to give us some space so Gary and I could spend time alone, she laughed right in my face and said:
"Sweetheart, I'm his mother.
I'M the main woman in his life.
And you...
you're just a TEMPORARY FLING for my son!"
That was it.
I'd had enough.
It was time for her to learn her lesson.
I asked a waiter to deliver a dessert to her cabin along with a BOX.
When he handed her the box, I was inside my own cabin and heard HER SCREAM.

What was inside that box?

And what did Donna do next?
