Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

**— PART 2 —**

Trevor's face went white.

Standing in our living room was his mother — and my lawyer.

He looked from one to the other, then back at me holding our two newborn daughters.

"What is this?" he said.

I kept my voice calm.

"This is the conversation you should have been here for three days ago."

His mother stepped forward.

Her eyes were red.

She had driven four hours the moment I called her from the hospital.

"Trevor," she said quietly.

"I saw your photos.

On the beach.

While she was in surgery."

He opened his mouth.

"Mom, it's not—"

"Don't." Her voice broke.

"You have two daughters.

You weren't there."

Trevor turned to me.

"You called my mother AND a lawyer?

Are you serious right now?"

I didn't answer.

My lawyer placed a folder on the table.

Trevor stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Read it," I said.

He didn't move.

His jaw tightened.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen — and something shifted in his face.

Something that looked like fear.

He knew I had seen something.

He just didn't know how much.

"How did you find out?" he whispered.
