Chapter 2: Those Five Words

It was a pregnancy test.

A positive one.

I stood frozen in that hospital hallway, staring at it through the plastic.

My mind went completely blank.

We have twin boys.

I had my tubes tied after the birth.

There is no reason — no possible reason — for my husband to be carrying a positive pregnancy test in his pocket.

My hands were shaking as I pushed open the door to his room.

Ethan was lying in the bed, his wrist wrapped, his eyes closed.

He looked so helpless.

So familiar.

So much like the man I had trusted completely for eleven years.

Then his eyes opened and found the bag in my hands.

Something crossed his face.

Just for a second.

Not relief.

Not love.

Fear.

"Hey," he said quietly.

"You didn't have to come all the way—"

"Ethan." I held up the bag.

"What is this?"

He went very still.

"It's not what you think," he said.

Those five words.

The ones every person dreads hearing from someone they love.

"Then tell me what it is," I said.

"Because right now, I'm thinking something I really don't want to think."

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Looked away toward the window.

And then his phone — still inside the bag — lit up with a message.

I could see the name on the screen from where I stood.

It wasn't a name I recognized.

But the first word of the message was enough to make my legs go weak.

*"Our—"*
