Chapter 2: The Note on the Counter

When Carter walked through the front door at 6 PM, the house was completely silent.

Not the usual kind of silence — not the brief pause between one child's scream and the next.

Real silence.

He stood in the doorway, golf bag still on his shoulder, and looked around.

The kids were gone.

Every single one of them.

On the kitchen counter, there was a single note.

*"Took the kids to Mom's for the weekend.

Dinner's not made.

Laundry's not folded.

I'm in the bath.

— The woman who used to be fun."*

He actually laughed at first.

He thought it was a joke.

Then he opened the fridge.

Empty, except for a half-eaten yogurt and some leftover pasta from Thursday.

He called my name.

No answer.

He knocked on the bathroom door.

"Are you serious right now?" he said.

"Where are the kids?

What am I supposed to eat?"

I turned up the music.

He stood outside that door for a long time.

Then I heard him say something I hadn't heard in years — quietly, almost to himself.

"When did she stop needing me?"

I didn't answer.

But I heard everything.

And that was only the beginning of what that weekend revealed about our marriage — and about Carter.
