Chapter 2: The Folded Piece of Paper

Tom froze the second he stepped off that stage.
Because I was standing right there.
His face went white.
The young woman beside him — pretty, maybe late twenties, still holding his arm — looked between us, confused.
"Tom," I said quietly.
"Introduce me."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
So I did it myself.
"Hi.
I'm his wife.
His actual wife.
We have a daughter together.
She's seven."
The woman dropped his arm like it burned her.
"You told me you were divorced," she whispered.
Tom shook his head.
"It's not — this isn't what it looks like —"
"Then what does it look like?" I asked.
People nearby had gone quiet.
Someone turned down the music.
Melanie was standing a few feet away, hand over her mouth.
Tom's boss walked up behind me and said, loud enough for the people around us to hear:
"Tom, I think you owe your wife an explanation.
And maybe HR a conversation on Monday."
Tom grabbed my arm and hissed, "Can we please talk about this at home?"
"Let go of me," I said.
He did.
Then the young woman pulled something from her bag.
A folded piece of paper.
Her hands were shaking.
"He gave me this," she said.
"Two weeks ago."
I looked down at it.
And my legs nearly gave out.
