Chapter 1: The Party That Was Never Canceled
My husband took ANOTHER "wife" as his plus-one to his company's summer party — but his boss made sure he regretted it.
My husband, Tom, recently started a job at a large company.
As I found out, the company holds two parties a year: one in winter and one in summer.
I learned that from a woman named Melanie, whose son goes to school with my daughter and who works at the same company as Tom.
When I asked Tom when the company party was because I wanted to buy a new dress and shoes, he shrugged and said:
"Honey, the boss said now isn't the time for company parties.
Budget cuts."
Oh, I was really disappointed.
The next day, I took my daughter to school and happened to run into Melanie.
I told her I was sorry things had worked out that way with the company party.
You know, just to keep the conversation going.
But Melanie frowned and said:
"Hmm, I think you must've gotten something mixed up.
THE PARTY IS HAPPENING.
No one canceled it."
Why had Tom told me the party was canceled?
Was he embarrassed to introduce me to his coworkers?
Or was there some other reason?
I decided I had to find out.
I smiled at Melanie and politely asked for the address, date, and time of the company party.
I made up an excuse that I wanted to surprise Tom.
She happily gave me all the details.
That evening, my husband told me his boss had buried them in so much work that he'd have to stay at the office until late.
Oh, I barely stopped myself from telling him that I knew about the party.
But I smiled and watched him leave.
Then I did my makeup, put on a beautiful dress, and went to the party.
It was at a gorgeous house with a pool.
At the entrance, I ran into Tom's boss.
I introduced myself as Tom's wife.
He went pale and asked:
"So YOU'RE Tom's wife?"
I said yes, that's right.
He frowned and said:
"But I thought THE WOMAN who came with Tom was his wife."
I froze.
Then he pointed across the yard, and I saw them.
My husband was standing there with his arm around some young woman.
My heart shattered right there.
Then Tom's boss whispered to me:
"I'LL TAKE CARE OF THIS.
Don't worry.
Just stay here."
He walked over to Tom and invited him up on stage.
Tom was smiling until his boss said SOMETHING about him that made him run out, red as a tomato.
