Chapter 2: The Diaper Bag He'd Never Opened

I stood up, handed Charlie to Ezra, and placed the diaper bag on his lap.

"He needs a change," I said.

"And Sophie needs her dinner cut up.

You've got this — you're the hands-on dad, remember?"

The table went quiet.

Ezra stared at me.

Then at Charlie.

Then at the diaper bag like it was something he'd never seen before.

"I — I don't know where the —"

"Everything's in the bag," I said calmly.

"Just like I've packed it every single day for eight months."

His aunt tried not to smile.

His sister looked away.

Charlie started to fuss.

Ezra held him at arm's length, completely lost.

Sophie tugged at his sleeve.

"Daddy, I'm hungry."

He didn't move.

His mother started to rise from her chair to help him, and that's when I said, quietly but clearly, "Please don't.

Let him do it."

She sat back down.

For the next ten minutes, the whole family watched in silence as Ezra fumbled through every single thing I do alone every single day.

He couldn't find the wipes.

He put the diaper on sideways.

Sophie's food sat untouched because he didn't know she needed it cut into small pieces.

By the end, his mother wasn't looking at him with pride anymore.

She was looking at me.

And she hadn't said a word.
