Chapter 1: The Man He Pretended to Be

My husband told everyone he was a "hands-on dad" even though he never lifted a finger to help with our two kids — at his mother's birthday dinner, I gave him the perfect chance to prove it.

My husband, Ezra, and I had been married for seven years, and we had two wonderful kids, four-year-old Sophie and eight-month-old Charlie.

I loved being a mom, but even though Ezra and I both worked full-time, almost everything involving the kids fell on me.

I handled meals, baths, diapers, drop-offs, bedtime, and most of the nighttime wake-ups with Charlie, while Ezra always seemed to have an excuse.

Around other people, however, he loved presenting himself very differently.

"Parenting is fifty-fifty in our house," he'd proudly tell relatives, and his mother believed every word.

At one family gathering, she even pulled me aside.

"Honestly, sometimes I think Ezra does more for those children than you do.

You should realize how lucky you are to have a husband like him."

Her words humiliated me, and on the drive home, I tried to tell Ezra how hurtful they'd been.

He simply laughed.

"Mom was joking.

Stop taking everything so seriously."

That only made it worse.

For the next week, I couldn't get their words out of my head, especially while I continued doing everything for the kids just as I always had and Ezra barely lifted a finger.

Then his mother's birthday arrived, and she invited the whole family over for dinner.

Once again, I spent most of the evening keeping Charlie settled and looking after Sophie while Ezra relaxed with his relatives.

Eventually, the conversation turned to parenting, and Ezra couldn't resist.

"I'm a very hands-on dad," he said proudly.

"Always have been."

His mother immediately agreed.

This time, I smiled.

"You're right," I said.

"Actually, tonight is the perfect chance to prove it."

Ezra looked at me, confused.

I smiled and put my little plan into motion.
