Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Plan

Daniel called his brother that night.

I didn't know he had told his brother Paul anything, but within twenty minutes Paul was at our front door with his wife Karen, and the look on Karen's face when she walked in told me she already knew more than I did.

Linda stood up when they came in.

"This is a private family matter."

"Sit down, Linda." Paul didn't raise his voice either.

It seemed to run in the family.

"We've been waiting for this conversation for two years."

"Paul—"

"Two years." He pulled out a chair at the dining table and sat down.

"Sit."

She sat.

Karen came to stand beside me.

She squeezed my arm once, quickly, then let go.

"Who is Margaret Holt?" Daniel asked his brother.

Paul looked at Linda before he answered.

"She's the woman Mom has been trying to set you up with since before your divorce was even a conversation." He paused.

"Except you were never having that conversation.

Mom was having it for you."

I felt the air go out of the room.

"She has a daughter," Karen said quietly.

"Twenty-nine.

Owns property in Linda's county.

Linda has been telling people for over a year that Daniel was separated."

"I'm not separated," Daniel said.

"No," Paul said.

"You weren't.

Until tonight."

Daniel turned to Linda.

"You told people we were already separated."

Linda's posture didn't change.

"I was preparing the ground."

"For what?"

"For the life you should have had." Her voice was perfectly calm.

"Margaret's daughter is educated.

She's established.

She doesn't have family pulling her in seven directions.

She would have been good for you."

"I have a family," Daniel said.

"I have a wife and a daughter."

"You have a wife who—"

"Who what?" His voice sharpened.

"Finish it.

Who what, Mom?"

Linda looked at her hands.

"You have nothing," he said.

"You made it up.

All of it."

Karen leaned toward me.

"Did you know about the refinance plan?"

"I found out tonight," I said.

"There was a message on Chloe's tablet.

Linda and this Margaret were texting about getting her name added to the deed."

Karen nodded slowly.

"Paul found something three months ago.

A letter Linda sent to a solicitor in the county.

Asking about spousal abandonment law and property transfer timelines."

The room went quiet.

Paul reached into his jacket pocket and set a folded paper on the table.

"I kept it."

Daniel picked it up.

He read it.

He set it down without a word and pushed it across the table to me.

It was a letter on plain paper, handwritten.

Linda's handwriting — I had seen it on birthday cards for eight years.

She had written to ask what the legal waiting period was before an abandoned spouse could petition for sole property rights.

She had asked whether a child remaining with the non-abandoning parent strengthened that petition.

She had signed it with a false name, but the return address at the top was her own street.

She had made one mistake in two years of planning.

"You wrote this before the fake messages," I said.

"This was the blueprint."

Linda said nothing.

"How long?" Daniel asked.

"How long have you been planning this?"

"Since the day she talked you out of moving closer to me." Linda looked up.

Her eyes were clear.

Unashamed.

"You were going to buy the house on Mercer Street.

Three minutes from my door.

She convinced you to stay on this side of town.

That was the day I knew she would always come first."

"She's my wife."

"She was in the way."

Chloe's voice came from the hallway.

Small and very certain.

"You're the one in the way, Grandma."

Nobody moved.

Chloe walked to the table and stood beside her father.

She didn't look at Linda again.

Paul reached over and covered Chloe's hand with his.

He looked at Daniel.

"What do you want to do?"

Daniel looked at me.

Not at his mother.

Not at the letter.

At me.

"Whatever Sarah needs," he said.

Linda's chin lifted slightly.

Her eyes moved to the letter on the table.

May you like

Then she said the thing that changed everything.

"Margaret has copies of documents you haven't found yet."
