Chapter 6: The Witness in the Gold Dress

I tore open the seam beneath the rabbit’s fabric.

A tracking tag and tiny speaker fell onto the kitchen floor.

Margaret stared at it.

“He put that in Ellie’s toy?”

Mrs.

Doyle entered and closed the door behind her.

“I heard the recording,” she said.

“Do not touch the device again.”

“I violated the order,” I said.

“Ellie came downstairs and saw me.”

Mrs.

Doyle looked at Ellie clinging to my coat.

“I was called here because Mr.

Mercer claimed you forced entry and threatened his mother.”

Margaret stepped between us.

“Then I will make a statement saying my son lied.”

Mrs.

Doyle photographed the device.

“Mrs.

Mercer, take Ellie upstairs.

Mara, your attorney wants you at the Kingsley offices before the custody hearing.”

At nine, I entered the boardroom with Helen and Thomas.

Grant sat in my father’s chair.

“Get out of that seat,” I said.

He folded his hands.

“The board asked me to remain.”

My uncle Conrad avoided my eyes.

Three directors had copies of the emergency custody order in front of them.

Grant tapped the table.

“Mara concealed a breakdown, endangered her child, and froze company accounts during a personal dispute.”

“You staged the video.”

“Prove it.”

Helen placed the old phone on the table.

“We recovered messages showing a plan to manipulate custody for access to Bluebird.”

Grant pressed the power button.

The blank screen reflected his smile.

“You brought a broken phone?”

“We heard the audio,” Margaret said from the doorway.

Grant shot to his feet.

“Mother.”

She walked in beside Mrs.

Doyle.

“You hid a listening device inside your daughter’s toy.”

“You’re confused.”

“I spent thirty-eight years believing that excuse.”

Conrad cleared his throat.

“Even if these claims are true, Mara’s signed proxy gives Grant temporary voting authority.”

“I never signed it,” I said.

Grant displayed the electronic record.

“Your password, your home network, your signature.”

One director lifted his hand.

“Until authenticity is determined, I move that Mara be suspended.”

The vote passed four to three.

Grant leaned back in my father’s chair.

“Security will escort you out.”

The doors opened.

Vanessa entered in the same gold dress, but she was carrying a laptop.

Grant’s smile vanished.

“You have no business here.”

“I have every reason to be here.”

She placed the laptop in front of Conrad.

“Grant used remote access to copy Mara’s signature.

I watched him do it.”

“You helped me,” Grant said.

“You’ll go down with me.”

“I know.”

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Claire called me this morning.

She said Sophie still wakes up asking why I lied about her mother.”

Her fingers shook as she opened a video.

“I recorded Grant after the hotel.

He thought I was still frightened enough to obey.”

Grant reached for the laptop, but Thomas closed it first.

“Copies have already been made,” Thomas said.

Vanessa looked directly at Grant.

“You promised Ellie would never be frightened.”

“I promised you money.”

“And that is finally all your promises are worth.”

The video played through the boardroom speakers.

Grant’s face appeared on-screen.

“If Mara fights the custody order, take Ellie from Margaret before the hearing.

Once I have the child, Mara will sign anything.”

Conrad pushed back his chair.

Grant’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked straight at me.

Then he smiled.

May you like

“You’re all too late,” he said.

“Ellie isn’t with my mother anymore.”
