Chapter 3: The Family He Practiced On

I tightened my arm around Ellie.

“What do you mean, she isn’t the first?”

Vanessa looked at Grant, then at the security officers beside him.

“My sister had a daughter named Sophie.”

“Be quiet,” Grant said.

Vanessa’s chin trembled.

“Claire inherited money from our grandfather.

Grant called himself Grant Miller then.”

“That’s a lie,” he snapped.

“She’s trying to save herself.”

Vanessa opened her gold purse, but Grant caught her wrist.

“Take your hand off her,” I said.

One security officer stepped between them.

Grant released Vanessa and straightened his jacket.

“She helped me,” he said.

“Ask her how Claire lost custody.

Ask who testified that her own sister was unstable.”

Vanessa’s knees nearly buckled.

I stared at her.

“You testified against Claire?”

“He showed me photographs.

He said Claire was neglecting Sophie.”

“Photographs he staged,” Grant said with a cold smile.

“But you still stood in court.”

Vanessa pressed both hands over her mouth.

Ellie shifted against my shoulder.

“Mommy, can we go home?”

“We will, sweetheart.”

The hotel manager held out the envelope.

“Mrs.

Mercer, my name is Thomas Bennett.

Your father instructed me to witness you opening this.”

Grant stepped forward.

“That letter contains private company material.”

Thomas did not move.

“Then you should not be concerned by it.”

I broke the seal with one hand.

Inside was a photograph of Grant standing beside a younger woman and a little girl.

The date printed across the bottom was six years before Grant claimed he had first met Vanessa.

On the back, my father had written four words:

**He has done this before.**

Grant’s smile disappeared.

“You knew my father had found you,” I said.

“He found nothing.”

Thomas removed a folded document from the envelope.

“There is also a sworn statement from Claire Cole.”

Vanessa reached for it.

“Claire wrote to your father?”

“She wrote that Grant persuaded her to sign temporary financial authority while she was ill,” Thomas said.

“Two weeks later, he used Vanessa’s testimony to seek control of Sophie’s trust.”

“I didn’t know what he wanted,” Vanessa whispered.

“You knew enough to lie in court,” I said.

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Grant gave a short laugh.

“This performance changes nothing.

Claire recovered her child, and I was never charged with anything.”

“Because you disappeared,” Vanessa said.

“You emptied the account and left me to answer every question.”

“You took your share.”

“I took money because you told me Claire would lose the house without it.”

Grant leaned close to her.

“Careful.

Your signature is on every page.”

The satellite phone rang again.

I answered on speaker.

“Mara, it’s Helen Ward,” said my family attorney.

“Do not leave the hotel.

Someone filed an emergency custody petition against you forty minutes ago.”

Grant calmly adjusted his cuff.

I looked at him.

“You filed it before I made the call.”

“I told you a judge would decide.”

Helen’s voice sharpened.

“Grant submitted medical records, witness statements, and video claiming Mara endangered Ellie.”

“They’re false,” I said.

“I believe you, but an emergency order may already be on its way.”

The revolving doors turned.

A process server entered with a uniformed child-welfare officer beside him.

Grant looked down at the money still scattered across the marble.

May you like

Then he looked at Ellie and smiled.

“Now,” he said, “let’s see who has the authority.”
