Chapter 2: The Message From the Inside

They put me in a holding room and left me there for two hours.

No one asked for my side.

No one wanted to hear it.

The detective who finally walked in dropped a folder on the table and crossed his arms.

"Mrs.

Harrington says you attacked her son without provocation.

She has six witnesses."

"She has six family members," I said.

"That's not the same thing."

He didn't blink.

"Your husband has second-degree burns.

That's a serious charge, ma'am."

My hands were shaking, but my voice stayed steady.

"There is a security camera mounted on the shelf in that dining room.

I saw the red light before they put me in this car.

Whatever they told you — that camera saw everything."

Something shifted in his expression.

Just slightly.

He stepped out without another word.

Twenty minutes later, he came back in.

This time he sat down.

"We've requested the footage," he said quietly.

"But the homeowner is claiming the camera malfunctions regularly and may not have recorded anything."

My stomach dropped.

Then my phone buzzed on the table between us.

An unknown number.

One message.

*"I saw what Brooklyn did.

I've been in that family for eleven years.

I'm not staying quiet this time."*

I looked up at the detective.

Neither of us spoke.
