Chapter 1: The Camera Nobody Knew Was Watching

My husband sl@pped me in front of his entire family, demanded I apologize for his sister's cruel lie, and thought he had already won.

He had no idea the kitchen camera was recording everything—and that one hidden video would expose the truth that could destroy them all.

"Apologize to my sister right now, or get out of this house!" Callan shouted, his voice echoing through the dining room.

I stood frozen, still holding the ladle I had used to serve the soup.

Across from me, his younger sister Brooklyn clutched her stained ivory dress, pretending to be a victim while everyone stared at me like I was the monster.

But I knew exactly what had happened.

We had only returned from our honeymoon the night before.

That morning, my mother-in-law Melissa Harrington invited the entire family to her Paradise Valley home for a "welcome lunch" and smiled as she handed me the responsibility of cooking for fifteen people.

"That way, we'll finally see if Anastasia knows how to be a proper wife," she said.

I ignored the insult because I wanted to belong.

But Melissa had never hidden how she felt about me.

My family owned a small hardware store in Mesa, while the Harringtons owned construction companies and hotels.

She constantly reminded me that I came from "a different world."

During my wedding day, she made me collect empty glasses while I was still wearing my dress.

The next night, Brooklyn walked into my bedroom, took my grandmother's bracelet, and laughed when I demanded it back.

When I told Callan, he simply said, "Don't make everything a problem.

We're family now."

Then came the lunch.

As I carried the soup toward the table, Brooklyn stepped directly into my path and slammed her shoulder into mine.

The bowl tipped instantly.

Most of the hot soup spilled onto the carpet, while only a few drops touched her dress.

She gasped dramatically.

"Anastasia, are you insane?

Do you know how much this cost?"

"You pushed me," I said softly.

Brooklyn's eyes filled with fake tears.

Callan immediately took her side.

"Why would she do that?"

"Because she has been trying to provoke me since I arrived."

Melissa slowly set her wine glass down.

"Unbelievable.

She's not only careless, she's disrespectful too."

Something inside me finally broke.

"I will not apologize for something I didn't do."

Callan stepped toward me.

The man standing there didn't look like the husband who once waited outside my workplace in the rain just to surprise me with dinner.

He looked like someone desperate to impress his family.

"I said apologize."

"No."

The sl@p came without warning.

My face burned as I turned back toward him.

Behind his shoulder, I saw Brooklyn's tiny smile.

On the kitchen counter sat the pan of scorching oil I was preparing for dinner.

I reacted before I could think.

The scream that followed shook the entire house.

Callan collapsed, clutching his burned face, while Melissa screamed his name.

I dropped the pan and stared at what I had done, shaken by what had just happened.

I didn't run.

Minutes later, police arrived.

Callan was taken away by ambulance, and I was escorted from the house in handcuffs—the same house where three days earlier I believed my new life had begun.

Melissa followed me outside, screaming, "I'll destroy you!

No one will believe you!

You'll go to prison!"

But before I entered the police car, I looked back at the dining room.

A tiny red light was blinking from the corner of the shelf.

A security camera.

And nobody knew what that camera had captured.

That camera recorded everything — every push, every sl@p, every smile Brooklyn tried to hide.
