Chapter 2: The Words He Should Have Said Sooner
He whispered it at first.
Like he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"They look exactly like my father."
The nurse glanced up.
The doctor went still.
I couldn't speak.
Archie's hands were shaking as he reached out and touched our son's tiny face.
"He has the same eyes.
The same ears.
This is…
this is my dad."
His father had passed away two years before we started trying.
Archie never fully got over it.
Then his voice broke.
"I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry for everything I said to you."
I wanted to feel relieved.
Part of me did.
But another part of me was still sitting in every one of those appointments alone in my heart, carrying his doubt for months.
I didn't say anything.
Then his mother stepped forward from the corner of the room.
She'd been quiet the whole time.
She looked at the babies, then at Archie, and something crossed her face that I couldn't read.
Not surprise.
Not joy.
Something else.
She said, very quietly, "There's something I should have told you both a long time ago."
Archie turned to look at her.
The room went completely silent.
