Chapter 2: The Box Beneath the Bed

It was a box.

Small, flat, wrapped in a plastic bag and taped shut — the kind of careful hiding that takes intention.

My hands were shaking as I peeled back the tape.

Inside was a stack of papers and two photographs.

The photos were of Thomas.

Taken inside our house.

Our kitchen.

Our living room.

Without him knowing.

And the papers — they were financial documents.

Bank statements.

In Thomas's name.

An account I had never seen before.

Deposits going back three years.

I sat on the edge of the bed and couldn't move.

Three years.

We had been married for nine.

And for three of those years, someone had been watching him.

Documenting him.

Hiding evidence under a mattress in our own home.

I heard the front door open.

"You started in here already?" Thomas called from the hallway.

I shoved everything back into the box.

"Just airing it out," I said.

My voice came out steady.

I don't know how.

He appeared in the doorway, smiling.

"Mom called.

She says she left her reading glasses.

I told her I'd check the nightstand."

He walked past me and opened the drawer.

I watched his face.

He found the glasses.

Held them up.

Smiled again.

He had no idea I was holding his secret in my lap.

Or maybe he did.
