My husband's parents lived with us for six months, and after they finally moved back home, I went to strip the guest room bed — but when I lifted the mattress, what was hidden underneath made my bl00d run cold.
My husband, Thomas, and I have always had an incredibly strong marriage.
We pride ourselves on being a solid team.
So, when his parents' house suffered severe water damage last winter, we didn't hesitate to invite them to stay with us in our first-floor guest room.
We assumed the repairs would only take a few weeks, but instead, it turned into half a year.
I won't lie — having your in-laws live with you for six months is a massive adjustment.
His mother, Eleanor, is a fiercely private person.
From the day they moved in, she made it politely but firmly clear that she preferred to take care of their room herself.
She washed their own linens, vacuumed the floors, and always kept the door pulled shut when they weren't inside.
I respected her boundaries, so I mostly left them to it.
Yesterday morning, their house was finally ready.
We helped them load their suitcases into the car, hugged them goodbye, and watched them drive off.
When we stepped back inside, Thomas and I let out a huge sigh of relief.
For the first time in six months, our home was completely quiet, and we finally had our space back.
This morning, I decided to deep-clean the guest room before turning it back into my home office.
I opened the windows to let some fresh air in and started stripping the bed.
When I tugged at one corner of the fitted sheet, it was wedged so tightly beneath the mattress that I had to lift it slightly to pull the elastic free.
Something shifted underneath.
I froze, lowered the mattress onto my knee, and reached beneath it.
As I looked down and realized what had been hidden there for the last six months, my bl00d ran cold.
