I must have read that note ten times.
Each time, my hands shook harder.
*Adrian lied to you.
Act normal.
DO EXACTLY WHAT I'M ASKING YOU TO DO NOW.*
But there was more written below that.
A second paragraph I almost missed because my eyes were blurring with tears.
"I am alive, Mary.
I have been alive this whole time.
I cannot explain everything in a letter.
But you must not call anyone.
Not yet.
Especially not Adrian.
If he finds out you know, it won't be safe."
I pressed the card against my chest and just sat there in my kitchen.
Fifty-six years.
He had been alive for fifty-six years.
And Adrian — the man who had sat across from me at James's memorial, who had held my hand while I wept, who had told me to my face that he watched my husband d\*e — Adrian had known.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
It was Adrian.
I stared at his name for a long moment, my whole body frozen.
The note said: *Act normal.*
I picked up.
"Mary," he said, and his voice sounded strange.
