Chapter 1: The Anniversary That Changed Everything

My husband returned to Vietnam two days after our wedding and never came back — 56 years later, flowers arrived with a note that began: "Honey, you won't believe why I had to disappear."
I married James in the summer of 1970.
He was on a short leave and had to return to Vietnam almost immediately.
We had a small ceremony at my parents' house, ate cake in the backyard, and spent exactly two days as husband and wife.
The morning he left, he kissed me and said:
"On our next anniversary, I'll buy you the biggest bouquet of yellow roses I can find."
But that never happened.
He never came back.
His unit came under heavy fire.
Many of the men in his unit were k\*lled, but James's body was never found.
So he was listed as missing in action.
Then his closest friend, Adrian, who had served with James, came to me and said:
"I saw the explosion.
Mary, I'm so sorry.
I don't think he could have survived."
Eventually, James was presumed d\*ad.
My heart shattered into a thousand tiny pieces.
God, I didn't know what I was supposed to do with my life after that.
I loved James so much that it was unbearably painful knowing he would never return to me.
I couldn't be with anyone else.
I never married again.
I just couldn't.
It was as if part of me was still waiting for James.
Fifty-six years passed.
And today would have been our 56th wedding anniversary.
Sometimes on this day, I sit and remember the wonderful times we had together and look through old photos.
This time, that's exactly what I did.
Then suddenly, someone knocked on my door.
A delivery driver was standing there holding a HUGE BOUQUET OF YELLOW ROSES.
I carried them into the kitchen, completely confused about who could have sent them.
Then I saw a NOTE.
My hands started trembling before I even opened it.
The card said:
"Honey, I never wanted things to happen this way.
You won't believe WHY I had to disappear back then.
Adrian lied to you.
Act normal.
DO EXACTLY WHAT I'M ASKING YOU TO DO NOW."
I had to sit down because I felt sick when I finished reading the note.
It was WORSE than anything I'd imagined.
My whole life had just been turned upside down.

What did Adrian lie about — and where has James been for 56 years?
