Chapter 2: The Photograph He Was Never Supposed to See

My legs barely carried me to the kitchen chair.

Brian set a photograph on the table between us.

Old.

Worn at the edges.

Two men standing outside a hospital — one of them was Robert, maybe twenty years younger.

The other was a teenage boy.

A teenage boy with both arms.

"That's me," Brian said quietly.

"I was seventeen."

My mouth went dry.

"What happened?"

"Your husband was my surgeon." His voice didn't waver, but his jaw did.

"There was a mistake during the operation.

A bad one.

He knew it.

His team knew it.

But no one ever told my family the truth."

I couldn't speak.

"I lost my arms because of a preventable error, and Robert spent the next fifteen years making sure the paperwork never reflected that."

The room felt like it was tilting.

"Brian…

does Emily know?"

He shook his head slowly.

"I only found out eight months ago.

I've been trying to decide what to do ever since."

"Then why — " My voice broke.

"Why did you still want to marry her?"

He looked at me with the steadiest eyes I had ever seen.

"Because I love her.

And because I think she deserves to know who her father really is."

A door opened behind us.

Robert was standing in the kitchen doorway.

He had heard everything.
