Chapter 1: The Man Who Made My Husband's Smile Disappear

My husband opposed our daughter marrying a man with a disability — after yet another argument, her fiancé asked me, "Your husband never told you the real reason he hates me, did he?"

When our daughter, Emily, came home from college with a diamond on her finger, I hugged her tight.

She had been telling us about her fiancé, Brian, for months, and finally brought him home to meet us.

But the moment Brian stepped in, my husband's smile vanished.

"Mom, Dad, this is Brian," Emily said.

Brian had lost both arms in an accident years earlier and used prosthetics with practiced ease.

He was warm, funny, and attentive to Emily, so I adored him before dessert.

Yet my husband, Robert, stared at Brian as if he had seen a ghost.

I couldn't understand why he was acting that way.

He was a doctor, after all, and had certainly treated people with all kinds of disabilities.

After the kids left, he set his glass down so hard that wine splashed across the counter.

"That wedding is not happening," he snapped.

"That boy can barely take care of himself."

"If this is about his prosthetics, I'm ashamed of you," I snapped back.

But Robert only said, "You don't understand," and walked away.

For months, he refused to discuss the wedding.

Whenever Brian's name came up, his jaw tightened.

Every time I tried to talk to him about it, he would start yelling and storm away before I could get a single answer.

Three weeks before the ceremony, I invited the kids to dinner, determined to end the feud.

Brian brought lilies between his prosthetic hands, while Emily wore her grandmother's pearls.

Everything felt normal until she mentioned the father-daughter dance.

Robert's fork struck his plate with a clang.

"There will be no dance because there will be no wedding," he said.

"Not to him."

Emily's smile vanished.

"Dad, what has Brian ever done to you?

Why can't you accept that he's the man I've chosen?"

Robert shoved back his chair so violently that it hit the wall.

"He is not the man you think he is!"

The color drained from Brian's face.

Without a word, he left the table and slipped into the kitchen.

I followed, desperate to apologize, but stopped when I saw his expression.

He was pale as a ghost.

"Brian, I'm so sorry," I whispered.

He turned to me, tears shining in his eyes.

"Your husband never told you the real reason he hates me, did he?"

My breath caught.

"You've met before?"

Brian smiled bitterly and pulled something from his pocket.

"Then everything you know about your husband is a lie.

You'd better sit down."

What did Robert do — and why has he kept it secret all these years?
